Reduce Reducible Representation

After a character table has been computed, you can reduce a reducible representation into its irreducible components. Choose Compute > Reduce Reducible Representation or use the controls on the character table to accomplish this.

 

• Enter the characters of the representation, separated by commas, in the Reproducible Representation text box.

• Click Reduce. The irreducible representations appear in the adjacent text field.

Example: Compute the character table for C3v. Enter the characters 4, 1, 0 in the Reproducible Representation text box, then click Reduce. Because you have entered the sum (column totals) of the three irreducible representations of C3v, A1+A2+E appears in the Irreducible Representations field.

Note: If you applied the Convert Complex Entries to Real Values checkbox in your character table computation, the reduction formula will yield erroneous results.
